You can’t heal in the environment that made you sick.
I grew up as a bit of a gypsy, traveling all around the United States with a horse trailer in tow, chasing after ribbons and prize money on the national show jumping circuit. But even after I hung up my spurs, retired my Irish Sport Horse, and called it a day, that impulse to wander remained.
I went from traveling the U.S. to wandering around the EU, even venturing as far as Russia, studying business, politics, and culture. I’d take on odd jobs, from working in the kitchen of a Danish chef to ghostwriting textbooks and selling my study guides—all while training for marathons and crashing the Tuborg Christmas Beer Launch.
When I graduated from university, I packed up my bags and moved to Chicago, where my gypsy-self continued to travel from place to place, like a bee foraging for knowledge wherever I could find it, from The Second City Training Center to learn the art of comedy to the tech incubator known as 1871, where I consulted startups on their messaging.
Eventually, I launched my own copywriting agency and, even after returning to my native Louisiana, I kept working with world-class clients — from champion shoemakers and master sommeliers to Savile Row tailors and a luxury hatmaker tucked away in the Loop.
From there, I ventured into the hallowed halls of government, rebranding a retail politician in his successful bid for governor and following a civil rights case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, writing compelling op-eds over two years before a final (albeit depressing) ruling crushed our hopes for justice.
But throughout all of these wild, and at times exciting, experiences, one thing remained the same: I was constantly burned out. And being the savvy, agile, results-oriented individual I am, I was constantly searching for solutions. Over the past few decades, I’ve done everything from Vipassana meditation retreats and religiously practicing Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga to weekly sensory deprivation tanks and gallons of melatonin to supplement my horrible insomnia. I’ve been a vegan, a raw vegan, a fruitarian, and worse. I’ve done fasting, grape cleanses, painful liver flushes and unbelievably expensive detoxes. And yes, I’ve done all of the colonics that go right along with it.
I spent years getting certified in holistic herbalism, then quantum biology. I was mentored by one of the best in the biz to become a quantum health practitioner, and for a while, I even ran my own practice—on top of my crazy busy schedule rebranding, rewiring, and reconfiguring struggling businesses.
Still, it wasn’t until I was hired by a specific company who shall remain nameless that everything truly shifted. Within my first few days with this organization, I was tempted to quit. It was hands down the most dysfunctional company I had ever pulled back the curtain on. Almost everyone there was sick and/or burned out; yet they took pride in working themselves to death. You could feel the tension in almost every meeting as they consistently chose dysfunction over results, or even profit. The only silver lining of that experience was that I was able to work with a man I’d known for a decade. And shortly after this ridiculous chapter (thankfully) concluded, we got married. But that experience was our personal catalyst for change.
Using my husband’s technology that he spent fifteen years developing, we were able to actually measure burnout. And after studying 100 million burned out working professionals, the cause of burnout became crystal clear. It wasn’t necessarily blue light, chemicals, endocrine disruptors, or even weak mitochondria that was making us miserable. That was certainly part of the equation, no doubt. But the true root of burnout was dysfunction. And the burned out individuals were not the ones causing it. Instead, they had simply found themselves “in a pickle”—stuck, confused, tense, and moody without the necessary language or understanding to communicate what was wrong or why. And while companies were throwing money at the problem with retreats and team building exercises, they were completely missing the much bigger issue.
Yet, by studying burnout at scale, we were able to see that certain people should not work together. We were able to identify who should never be a CEO or a manager or Chief Innovation Officer. We were able to clearly see who the true innovators, change agents, and leaders were, and who was holding them back, even if only subconsciously. And, as painful as it was, we could see how our own psychology had contributed to our burnout.
That’s when I started to realize that not all of my working experiences had burned me out. It was only specific ones that had contributed to my exhaustion, frustration, and even suicidal thoughts. It was the environment in which I had placed myself, the personalities I’d had to navigate, and my own responses to the obstacles that had been put in my way. I was burned out because of behavior—not because of a toxin, some gluten, or even a piece of meat. And downward dog wasn’t going to fix it either. Even therapy would have been useless. Because, in all of those situations, I had been in the wrong role with the wrong people.
Now we’re offering you the ability to skip that pain and suffering and go straight to the results. When you subscribe to our email series, you will get insights and clarity that is not available anywhere else. You will then be given an opportunity to actually measure your burnout, identify your psychological triggers, and understand why you feel exhausted, run down, and bitter. Trust me, once you see your situation clearly, you’ll never be confused about what’s happening again, whether you’re a gypsy like me or prefer to stay rooted.
With this program, we’ll help you find your place, your people, and your purpose. And it doesn’t require a Zoom call, a long-ass questionnaire, or even an interrogation about your triggers. This is the easiest path to healing burnout, and as someone who’s dealt with burnout more often than she can count, this is the offer I wish I had been given over a decade ago. Because once you understand who you are, where you excel, and the types of people who give you energy (rather than feed off of it), there is no limit to what you can do.
